Cut Grading Round Fancy Brilliant Diamonds
January, 2003

The AGS Laboratories provides cut-grading services for certain 'Round Fancy Brilliant Cut DiamondsTM'. The AGS Laboratories cut grades Round Brilliants having facet arrangements different than the normal Round Brilliant, while using parameters presently in place for polish, symmetry and proportions. Such diamonds are referred to as 'Round Fancy Brilliant CutsTM'.

The American Gem Society was the first organization to provide a cut grade; previously assigned only to the traditional Round Brilliant diamond, containing 57 or 58 facets. The AGS Laboratories utilizes the Cut Grading Standards of the American Gem Society to provide the trade and consumers with an additional tool to analyze diamond value. The AGS Fancy Cut Grade Research Project, being conducted at the AGS Laboratories facility on the AGS Campus in Las Vegas, has been gathering data from the physical analysis of fancy shaped diamonds to construct a new performance-based cut grading system. The ability to cut grade the 'Round Fancy Brilliant CutTM' is a direct result of the research findings.

The laboratory will not use the wording 'AGS Ideal' or any term that implies 'ideal' as a descriptor for 'AGS Round Fancy Brilliant CutsTM'. The terminology 'AGS Ideal' will be reserved for the traditional round brilliant diamond, containing 57 or 58 facets. This will eliminate confusion and preserve the integrity of the AGS Diamond Standards.
