AGS Labs to Present on Cut Grade Trends at IIJS Las Vegas, June 10, 2005: Attendees at the India International Jewelry Show will have the opportunity to learn the “New Trends in Diamond Cut Grading,” in a free educational session presented by Peter Yantzer, Executive Director of American Gem Society Laboratories on July 15th from 11:30-1:00. The presentation will give participants a better understanding of the new AGS Cut grading system, and explain how AGS Lab graders apply the cut grade to diamonds, as well as the particular role of certain elements assessed, such as proportion factors. The presentation will be interactive; so participants can constructively interact with experts conducting the events, and also with their peers in the industry. “A thorough understanding of these parameters, and the metrics that measure them, can help identify which cuts produce the best appearance, and can help increase sales of fine goods,” said Yantzer, who recently won the AGS 2005 Robert M. Shipley Award. The science supporting the new cut grade system reflects AGS’ transition from a proportion-based to a performance-based cut grade system, where all facets of a diamond are measured in three dimensions rather than two dimensions. The Lab will use state-of-the-art ray tracing software to trace light traveling through a diamond. The software demonstrates the quantity and quality of the light being returned to the viewer. AGS Laboratories will now consider brightness, dispersion, leakage, contrast, and weight ratio, in addition to proportion, symmetry, and polish, when assigning a final cut grade. “With this revolutionary system, and the release of the first-ever Cut grade for princess shapes, AGS Labs is the irrefutable leader in Cut grading,” says Yantzer. The methodology used in the new system can be applied to all fancy shapes and arrangements. “We are steadily working to release Cut grades on other fancy shapes in the near future.” AGS Laboratories recently began issuing DQDs on both the princess cuts and on the round brilliants with the new performance-based system.
